Women Authoring Change
noon-1 pm
Hear women writers in whose stories and ideas have shaped our culture now and for the future. All are Bay Area alums of the Hedgebrook writer’s colony, which has supported and transformed the work of 1,200 visionary women writers over the last 22 years. As Gloria Steinem said during her recent residency: “Hedgebrook isn’t a retreat…it’s an advance.”
Faith Adiele, Eugenie Chan, Carolina De Robertis, Elana Dykewomon, Elaine Elinson, and Amy Wheeler (moderator)
AltPub
1-2 pm
When even media giant Newsweek asks, “Who Needs a Publisher?”, it’s time to wonder if the Big Six paper publishers are the only route to literary success. Social publishing, e-books, print-on-demand, small publishers, self-publishing, and even Twitter now offer writers new and more direct access to their readers.
Marta Acosta, Kathleen Fitzgerald (moderator), Lian Gouw, Luke James, Hyla Molander, Peter Plate, and Matt Stewart
The Golden Gate and Beyond
2-3 pm
A plethora of readers addressing the local history of San Francisco and California.
Gabrielle Burton, David Chu, Scott James, Jonathan Kiefer, and Merla Zellerbach
Literature in Translation
3-4 pm
Nearly every year, there’s an international bestseller that garners a bunch of press, but that is a slim slice of the amazing international literature that gets translated into
English each year. The Center for the Art of Translation brings together three experts, an Arabic translator, a Hebrew translator, and a Japanese translator, to introduce Litquake audiences to some of the exceptional voices from these regions that they may have missed.
Kareem James Abu-Zeid, Scott Esposito (Moderator), Chana Kronfeld, and Eric Selland
